KARBI YOUTH FESTIVAL~A time to come together

KARDOM

Once in the valleys, hills, and plains of the north-eastern geography,
there was a place called ‘Rongbin’ and with the ‘Rongbin’ the Karbis
came the demographic movement in this last tip of south-east Asian
cauldron was intense. Small indigenous groups were jostling each other
from Vietnam to Burma, this was the period when Hindustan was being
articulated from the earlier Bharatvarsh. Small nationalities like the
Karbis were becoming part of the fringe in the pantheon of greater
Indian historiography. However, in the Indian north-east Karbis didn’t
have to jostle with.Being the earliest settlers, their existence was
in complete consonance with nature, green forests, rivers and Karbis
never acted like Columbus! But with the onslaught of ‘civilization’ ,
every Karbi arleng has become marginalized. Once a Karbi rong
(village), Kuwehonchi (Guwahati) is now a concrete jungle. Only the
names of some dingy and obscure by-lanes betray the wounded past. Once
a Karbi habitat, Kajir-arong has become distant and disdainful.Karbis
are everywhere,from Manipur,NagalandCachar,
Meghalaya to Arunchal.we
are not exclusive…rather we’ve been always inclusive, embracing
cultures and people..but only paid back in
discrimination, displacement and dispossession! Today, the land that
we call ours is encroached upon and there are more strangers than
kinsmen where have they all gone?? We are still looking for them,in
the hills and plains and valleys!! Welcome to Karbi Anglong….
Join
the KYF 2010…feel the heartbeat of Assam!!

The 36th Karbi Youth Festival invites YOU to a celebration of the resurgent Karbi people’s joyful expression in search of a cultural identity.

KARBI YOUTH FESTIVAL

- A time to come together

(Recognized as the North-Eastern India’s Largest Ethnic Festival, it features over 5000 cultural activists on 4 stages during its annual 5-day run in mid February. The festival features national and regional musical entertainment, more then 1 million visitors, over 2000 exhibitors, food vendors, stalls & exhibition, fun shopping and much more! )

The year was 1974. The Venue: Diphu Karbi Club. A handful of Karbi Youth got together to organize, for the first time in the headquarter town of Diphu a Youth Festival, till then never thought of by others. Initially it was small festival. But within a few years it became a major incident in Karbi Anglong as well as in Northeast and looking back one finds the Karbi Youth Festival has not only become an annual event which the entire Karbi Anglong looks forward to, but also a forum to determine and redefine Karbi  Art and Culture from a new and progressive viewpoint.

Three years after the first festival was organised was born the KARBI CULTURAL SOCIETY, on January 30, 1977 and since then the responsibility of organizing this festival was passed on from the hands of a few enthusiastic youth to a body representing the entire Karbi people.

Karbi Youth Festival is a celebration of Karbi heritage and culture held on the beautiful and evergreen Taralangso near Diphu as its permanent venue. An area of 1086 bigha was selected as for the permanent festival site and two stages built on Greek model, have been constructed at this site, which have been named SING MIRJENG and LONG MIRJENG. This facility apart, the green surrounding of the cultural complex has a series of highly raised bamboo and thatched Chang-Ghars depicting the typical houses of Karbi people. The week long festival there not only attracts a cross section of people from all over the Karbi Hills, but also from all over India and even outside. Since its inception in 1974, the festivals mission has been to promote and share the culture and heritage of all people of Karbi descent with the global community.

Karbi Youth Festival is not only an entertaining event but an educational experience. Come and explore the cultural village, sample a variety of ethnic foods, shop around the Marketplace, let the kids play in the Children’s Village and enjoy lots of great entertainment.

Our festival honors culture, tradition, and family. Karbi Youth Festival encourages individuals from all ethnic backgrounds to share in the beauty of Karbis’ rich history, art, music and foods

Each day of KYF is a unique and unforgettable experience. Come together to enjoy all of these great Special Attractions!

See you at The Meeting Place!!

ACCESSIBILITY

This area is designed to assist our patrons, well wishers and visitors. We hope this area will help you to have an enjoyable visit at Karbi Youth Festival.

Staying Safe in Diphu

As in any city, there are a few common sense rules to follow to stay safe. Look after your personal belongings and try not to travel alone late at night. Ask your hotel or hosts for advice when travelling to unfamiliar areas.

Violent crime against visitors is uncommon. However, pickpockets do target unsuspecting tourists in crowded areas, so take care on the Tube or in busy areas.

Karbi Anglong’s Police Force

The Diphu Police, is dedicated to working for a safer Karbi Anglong. The Met forms a visible presence on the streets of Diphu, at railway stations and airports.

In emergencies, always dial 100 and ask for the police. To a report non-urgent crime, contact your local police station.

Staying Healthy in Diphu

Visitors who become ill while in Diphu are eligible for free treatment in Accident and Emergency departments at Diphu Civil Hospital.

In emergencies, always dial 108 (Mrityunjay) and ask for the help, which will reach to you within 15/20 mints.

For accommodations for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or have low vision and other services please contact the Karbi Youth Festival’s “Courtesy Staff”.

PARKING AT THE FESTIVAL

Ample parking is available both in privately operated lots and along city streets. Fees vary. Vendors with booth spaces will receive directions to special unloading areas at the gates.

MONEY: Cash machines / ATM / cash points

There are 2  cash withdrawal machines (also known as cash points or ATMs) around Diphu.

Most accept international cards with the Visa, Plus, MasterCard, Cirrus or Maestro symbols. Other card types are also recognized, but it’s a good idea to check with your bank before you travel.

If you have a non-INDIAN account you’ll almost certainly have to pay a charge when you withdraw cash from a machine. Again, contact your bank before traveling for details.

When using ATMs, remember

  • Put your money away carefully and discreetly.
  • Don’t give money to people in the street as this shows where you keep your wallet.

How to Travel Like a Local

Little things mean a lot to Karbis. Keep the following in mind, and you’ll soon blend in:

  • Allow more than enough time to get around, particularly during rush hour (7-9am, 4-7pm).
  • Remember: traffic travels on the left-hand-side of the road, so look right before crossing

AN APPEAL

Like the previous years, this year too the 36th Karbi Youth Festival will be held at Taralangso near Diphu Town from 15th to 20th Feb. 2010 under the aegis of Karbi Cultural Society. The KCS is a registered premier cultural organization for promotion and protection of the culture and tradition of the Karbi Community in particular and other ethnic communities of Karbi Anglong in general. The Karbi Youth Festival is a common platform that endures to spread the spirit of harmony and peaceful co-existence through the medium of culture between diverse ethnic communities. In that sense the KYF is a unique rendezvous of cultures in the entire North-East.

Over the years the Karbi Cultural Society has been organizing the Karbi Youth Festival with the help of nominal Govt. grant and from a limited organizations/establishments and well wishers.

Although all efforts have been to conduct the KYF within a slim budget, the bare minimum expenses cannot be done away with in order to fulfill the aspiration of the large number of cultural conscious crowed that throng at Taralangso each year to enjoy KYF. It is in this context that I on behalf Karbi Cultural Society would appeal to you/your organization/establishment to extend your generous hand in making this year’s 36th Karbi Youth Festival a grand success by extending your support.

Thanking you in anticipation

Kardom !!

Yours’ sincerely

  9. Very impressive and very new Ranjan. See you at the festival!

  10. Kardom guys! Even though I wouldn’t be able to make it this year due to certain engagements, I hope that the fest this year would be way better than the previous editions and receive more coverage than never before. Being outside our homeland, we feel a deep sense of pride when events like these receive some measure of publicity on the national circuit and it inspires us to work harder in whatever it is that we are engaged in to achieve more in the larger interest of our community. I’ll be keeping track of the proceedings through your website and hope that you guys would update it regularly throughout the fest. And great work on the website guys, very professional. Will keep in touch. Klem-me Jume!

  11. I congratulate all those who worked hard to put this blog and the entire promotion together. Great job!

I also want to point out two issues on this blog. First, it seems there is a confusion with the term “culture”. It is often misconstrued as a synonym with the terms, “tradition” and “custom”. Tradition and customs are part of culture, but culture is more than tradition and custom. Culture, as you know, is “the way we look at the world.”

Therefore, Karbi culture is the way Karbis look at the world. We also know that culture is dynamic. Which means the way we look at the world changes; improves with time and experience. However, tradition and customs are not necessarily dynamic. Often, they are static.

What I find from this blog is that Karbis are searching again for their rich heritage of traditions and customs, and not “in search of a cultural identity” as written above.

This means the Karbi Youth Festival is NOT a search for cultural identity. We already have a cultural identity. Which is the present day Karbi people looking at, and interacting with, the world.

Secondly, Karbis were never even close to “the fringe” (sic), not to talk about being a part of “the pantheon of Indian historiography” as mentioned above.

    Kardom!

    Milton Terang

  12. Romon Ronghang Says:

    Kardom !

I wished to be there during this year fest but because of my exam i was unable…..Its a great miss. But it give me happiness to know that this year the first Taralangso Music Fest has introduced in the fest……..it’ll give a platform to all the rockers who are lacking due to lack of such platform………Great job !!!!!
